Education in Jordan: A Visit to Al Hussein Technical University

Jordan always has a surprise waiting around every corner – a fact I’ve learned time and time again over the years. This time, my journey took me to the Al Hussein Technical University (HTU), a relatively young institution located in the King Hussein Business Park. HTU’s concept is closely tied to practical experience: “Employability” is the focus here, always geared towards the needs of the labor market. According to Dr. Hussam Khasawneh, Director of the Office of Industry Partnerships, all students find a job immediately after graduating – an impressive achievement given Jordan’s unemployment rates.

Flexible Degrees for the Job Market

Degrees can be earned in two, three, or four years, and students can re-enroll at any time to continue their studies up to the bachelor’s level. This dynamic concept emphasizes project-based and team-oriented work, including an eight-month integrated full-time internship.

Advanced Technology and German Expertise

During my tour of the university, Prof. Tarek Tutunji, Dean of the School of Engineering Technology, showed me some of the impressive labs. One of the highlights was the Virtual Reality Lab (VR Lab), equipped with cutting-edge VR technology for a variety of applications, including gaming.

I was also introduced to the German Energy Academy, which I hadn’t heard of until my visit. Hamzeh Buqaeei, the Academy’s Director, gave me a comprehensive overview of their activities. One of the major partners, and the namesake of one of the labs, is SMA Solar Technology. Other partners like GIZ, AHK, Niuversity, and the German Jordanian University (GJU) are also involved.

HTU and GJU – Competitors?

Although I am a big fan of the GJU, the question arose as to whether HTU is a competitor. In my opinion, this is not the case. Both universities excel in their respective fields, but they focus on different aspects and collaborate in many areas. The combination of both concepts helps Jordan achieve its goals and train the much-needed talent.

Conclusion: Outsourcing in Jordan – More Than Just an Option

Given the advancements and opportunities I witnessed during my visit, I am more convinced than ever that outsourcing in Jordan is an excellent option – even in challenging times. Despite the circumstances, I have always felt safe and welcomed in Jordan.
